What is the Name of God? The popular King James version of the Lord’s Prayer says to Him, “Hallowed be thy name,” which The Holy Bible in Modern English interprets as, “Your Name must be being hallowed.” “Hallowed” means revered as sacred. But what is His Name? “God” is a description. “Lord” is a title of honour. But neither of these is a name.
In the Old Testament, God is often called “THE LORD,” which the introductions to these versions will tell you is actually “Jehovah,” which is an Anglicization of the Hebrew “Yahweh.” Therefore some religious denominations insist on calling Him Jehovah, or Yahweh. However, Yahweh means “I am Who I am.” If I asked you your name and you told me, “I am who I am,” wouldn’t you be telling me your name is none of my business?
In order to understand this, we need to know some things about the distant past. We lived before, with God in Heaven. But Satan started a rebellion there and we followed the devil in that insurrection, so we were killed in the war that ensued. There are people on earth, on the other side, who know this, because it seems to be essentially the theme of the Star Wars movies. The hero of Star Wars is a rebel named Luke Skywalker, which is an occult nickname for Lucifer, the devil. We are fallen angels, stripped of our angelic powers. We died in that war but God Our Father was grieved to lose us, so He’s giving us one chance to change, as mortals on earth. Faith in Christ is God’s way of laundering us from evil to good.
The book of Enoch from the Ethiopic speaks of “two hundred satans,” so Lucifer had that many rebel-chiefs. These angel-devils cannot change, because they have done too much evil. They are destined to be forever destroyed, when they have finished their job. And what is their job? They are the founders and leaders of the World Order, which has corrupted our society. Because we sinned in Heaven by following Satan, God made our punishment fit the crime, by letting the devil lord it over us on the earth, for a set time–until those of us willing to follow Christ get good and sick of the devil. The 200 satans are near to reaching the climax of their control, by starting a world war they hope will wipe our people off the earth and they will kill many. But God is going to intervene. After a brief time of their enslaving us totally, God will destroy our enemies, to save those of us who return to Christ. By that time, the worldly forces who invade and conquer us will have killed off most of our corrupt leadership class, leaving us free to establish an honest society.
Now that we know the biblical context, let’s return to the Name of God. He has a Name but we cannot yet know it, because being fallen creatures, we would profane it. God is totally pure and if His Name were known today, the majority of the people would drag it through the dirt–exactly as the Holy Name of Jesus Christ has been profaned. There is more than one way to do that. Sometimes the profanity masquerades in the form of false religion. One of the Ten Commandments says, “You shall not take the Name of your God in vain.” This applies to more than swearing. More broadly, it refers to misrepresenting Him and His intentions, which is far worse than swearing.
After the resurrection of the dead, all the people who have returned to Christ during their lives will be reunited with God by Christ. Then we will learn God’s Name. For the time being, the most personal word we have for Him is “Our Father.” Jesus Christ Himself refers to Him as “Father,” in the gospels. Meanwhile, we have the actual Name of Jesus Christ, our Leader, Who was sent by God, to solidly connect us with Him.
