I used to be a sound sleeper but after I had a heart attack, I couldn’t sleep for about three months and I was worn out. In desperation, I took the odd prescription sleeping pill but even then I didn’t feel really rested. I hated to take those, because they are said to contribute to heart attacks. So does insomnia. I learned from the internet that the cause of the insomnia is the beta blocker drug that everyone who has a heart attack gets prescribed (Metaprolol, Bisoprolol, etc.). These slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure. Unfortunately, they also prevent the body from producing melatonin, which we need to get to sleep. I tried taking straight melatonin but it didn’t work.
Then I tried a non-prescription, health-food type product called Naka Pro Sleep. It worked the first time and it’s been working ever since (three weeks). I still don’t sleep a long time (about 6-7 hours) but I sleep deeply and awaken totally rested. I took the recommended two capsules.
The label says each capsule contains 100 mg L-Theanine, 25 mg GABA, 50 mg 5HTP, 100 mg Valerian, 75 mg Passionflower, 50 mg Hops, 3 mg Melatonin and 60 mg Magnesium Bisglycinate.
It’s made in Toronto and sold in some health food stores and pharmacies. If you can’t find it locally, they’ll sell it to you by mail order. Their website is www.nakapro.com. It’s not specifically for cardiac recovery. It’s a general purpose insomnia treatment.
I am not in any way affiliated with this company. I just don’t want my readers suffering from torture by sleep deprivation, like I did. Sweet dreams.
P.S. After a few months of using the above product, I returned to sleeping normally without it, so I quit. But it got me through a difficult period.
